Without doubt, pregnancy is one of natures miracles. For many women, it can be exciting as well as challenging. As the woman’s body is flooded with hormones, it affects not only her physical health but her emotional health and can often leave the her feeling anxious, exhausted and physically uncomfortable.
As the weight of the uterus increases, there is a change in the centre of gravity. This can lead to increased curves in the spine as the body’s centre of gravity moves forward in relation to the spine. If there is inadequate muscular support then the pelvis can tip forward, resulting in poor posture. Pelvic tilting is the key movement to help strengthen the muscles and ligaments, so counteracting the strains of increased ‘lordosis’ of pregnancy.
Massage during pregnancy can be very beneficial especially throughout the 2nd and 3rd trimester. Right from the start, the mothers senses are heightened (in an attempt to protect the unborn baby) so as well as possibly suffering from nausea, she may find she suffers from sinus congestion. There are various massage techniques that can help give relief to many of the symptoms associated with pregnancy such as back or hamstring pain. Massage also encourages the mother to relax and improve her sense of well being.
